Another World Record Broken By Don

Over the past year i have featured a number of people on my radio show highlighting their ‘life and careers, so far’  and I have great news regarding one guy and his team achieving a new world record crossing the Atlantic. Don Lennox was part of that team and we at the careers show take great pride in being a part of this historic occasion. Don was a main feature on the show last year highlighting his record breaking achievements and attempts.

Using Martial Arts to Keep Off the Streets

This week we have the third and last of our sports students feature from Kilmarnock College and something a bit different. Colin Cuthbert is an International Karate Champion and his dream is to set up his own Martial Arts business and put something back into the community and hopefully steer more people away from the temptations of the street. Colin says that “ ..if it was not for my martial arts interest, God knows where I would have ended up.” Interested in sports? Why not follow Colin’s life so far and be inspired. As part of the regular features on adults gaining support for employment and education, I dropped into a local Wise Group project called Look Ahead to meet some of the trainees involved in the project. Over the coming weeks, I will be featuring four interviews with the trainees talking about their life and careers so far and how they are overcoming personal difficulties on the path back to possible education and employment. This weeks interview is with Eleanor Chapman, former community centre worker and mother of six Children. Hear Eleanor tell of her life and career so far and how the project helped her overcome some difficulties and hopefully back into helping others in her community. Another truly inspirational interview. By the way, Last weeks interview was well received.

Look Ahead project

Coming soon: next week, a group of trainees from Momentum will be in the studio ‘live’ presenting their life and careers and what Momentum is doing to support. An insight into the Saltire Foundation and a special on the current hit sensation ‘dance’. I will covering a full feature on YDance soon. And, the interview with alternative medicine guru Jan de Vries.

What’s On This Week?

The Making of a Festival

People always say to me “how do you set up a festival?”. So, I thought, the best way to answer that question would beto meet the people at the ‘coal face’ so to speak. Joanne Mcadams and myself spent a full weekend interviewing for example founder member of the Wickerman Festival, Syd Ambrose, who tells how the festival came about and how it has successfully grown over the past nine years from a small Community Youth Group idea to its current standing in the Scottish festival scene. You will also hear other exclusive interviews with roadies, lighting and DJ’s.

Sports Students Aim High

Sometimes, when you speak to people about sports, they tend
to enquire about the so called popular sports such as football and rugby
but a trip to Kilmarnock College Centre for Sports Excellence revealed that most of the students had interests in far wider sports such as tennis,
badminton, karate and netball to name a few.

This weeks interview is with a former WRAF and electronics worker now hoping to use the skills gained on the project to further her opportunities. A truly inspirational interview

On this weeks show:

Get… Ready… For… Work…

Every now and then it is good to bring groups of young people into the studio live to experience the world of radio
(keeps me on my toes) and learn the art of radio communication. Sometimes I say, why? But, on a recent visit to Protocol Skills in Kilmarnock, I met with a group of young people involved with the get ready for work programme and thought it a good idea to invite them for a day to the studio. So, for the first hour of the show, Protocol Skills will be co-hosting the show telling us about their time at Protocol and what they hope to achieve. Some will be reading out some news and others music dedications to their family and friends.
This should be an unpredictable but fun packed hour and hopefully the group enjoy the experience.
Oh, and not to forget Sara and Evelyn, the training advisers, who will be put on the spot, I can assure you.

‘Take a Break’ - TV Fiction Writing

Introducing for the first time on radio -‘Take A Break’ a brand new lunchtime careers chat.
Hosted by myself monthly as part of The Careers Show.

And, what better way to start this new concept than talk to a group of TV scriptwriters, lecturers and students involved in the MA Television Fiction Writing course at Glasgow Caledonian University.
Taking part in the discussion will be Ann Marie Di Mambro, lecturer and prominent script writer for TV productions such as Eastenders and River City, Dr Catriona Miller, head lecturer, students Allison Devine, a former nurse, actor and writer, Stewart Hill, former Gas employee and Marc Westbrook, writer.
During this lively conversation I hope to gain an insight into the world of television script writing, how to enter such a lucrative and competitive job and a wee bit about the life and careers of the group.

Professional Cookery at Ayr College

Professional Cookery at Ayr College

Ayr College

The Life & Lecturing of a Professional Chef
“When you are trained here at Ayr College, you are trained to an exceptionally high level and prepared for the ‘real world’” Sound words from
Lecturer in Professional Cookery, Norman Robertson. Norman has seen it all in the catering trades and has brought his valuable experience to the college preparing our future ‘chefs’ for an exciting career in Professional Cookery. “One thing.” he says “ be prepared to work hard in a demanding trade.”

Chemical Industries Association

I recently spoke to Aimee McLaughlin, a mechanical engineer at NES Grangmouth to discuss careers within an area I never knew a great deal about. Aimee is an award winning engineer and works tirelessly for the Chemical Industries Association in encouraging new blood into the industry. Aimee tells of her career path so far and how she intends supporting others into an exciting field of work.
The Chemical Industries Association is the organisation that represents chemical businesses throughout the UK. Our activities are split between lobbying and provision of advice and services. Our policy agenda stretches across the economy and competitiveness; our products and the way we work; health, safety & environment and employment issues. The products and services of the chemical industry can be found in every area of our lives - from vital medicines, foods and clothing, through housing and transport, to communications and leisure activities.

Julianne Fraser-LAGTA

Julianne and Scott
aim to put the ‘Wheels in Motion’
At LAGTA

There is more to garage services than meets the eye and a wee trip up the M8 to meet Scott Rabie and Julianne Fraser of Training company LAGTA certainly confirmed this. From sales to administration to HGV, light and plant mechanics to body repair and more….this state of the art centre is set up for all the modern garage trade needs. I was fortunate enough to meet some apprentices carrying out their training but the stars of this weeks feature are Julianne and Scott with an enthusiastic insight into their respective jobs.

James Watt College,Kilwinning

Healthcare Students tell all at James Watt College

It never seizes to amaze how a variety of people from all walks of life who enter further education can mix and gel together as they strive towards a new career. This interview provided a great insight into how a group of students in health care support and encourage one and other throughout their course. A must if you are unsure about college.
